Additional Resources
MSSA does not provide equipment, so you are responsible for bringing your own hardware and software. However, we highly recommend taking advantage of these UBC resources for high-quality gear and studio space.
Equipment Lending
-
Chapman Learning Commons (IKB Level 3): Offers 1–3 day loans for DSLRs (like Canon Rebel T5i and EOS R50), tripods, smartphone stabilizers (DJI Osmo), microphones (Yeti, Rode), and laptops.
-
Arts ISIT: Provides a wide range of audio/visual equipment, including video cameras, lighting kits, PA systems, and various adapters for students in the Faculty of Arts.
-
UBC Studios: Features professional-grade video, sound, and lighting equipment available at no cost, though advance booking via their online catalogue is required.
-
UBC PhotoSoc: Members can access specialized camera gear and equipment rentals throughout the academic year.
Creative Spaces
-
Music, Art & Architecture (MAA) Library: Home to the DIY Media Studio, a sound-buffered space bookable for high-quality audio and video recording. It includes a Mac workstation with Adobe Creative Cloud, Premiere Pro, and Audacity.
-
PhotoSoc Studio: Members have access to studio space located in the LIFE building.
FAQ
Is there a final round of presentations? No. You will only submit your work via Devpost. Our panel of professors will judge your submission asynchronously over the two weeks following the event.
What if I don't have a team? Teams are limited to a maximum of five members, but you are welcome to compete individually. If you'd like to join a group, we can help assign you to a team on the first day of the event.
How "finished" does the project need to be? Since this is a 48-hour jam, we value the strength of the idea and engagement with the theme over high-fidelity polish. However, it must be functional enough for a judge to evaluate within the 5-minute limit.
Can I use assets I created before the event? To ensure fairness, all core work must be completed within the 48-hour window. You may use standard libraries or templates, but the primary creative output must be "jammed" during the event.
